Easy Fall Pumpkins - No Gooey Guts!

I'm sick of carving pumpkins.  It's super fun, and we usually do it.  But I get all itchy and it's a mess and it's frustrating even when you use a stencil.  OVER IT.  We visited a pumpkin patch at a neat vintage place called Revival Texas two weekends ago.  We didn't find any pumpkins that really tickled our fancies, and we had a feeling they were ridiculously priced.  I did find I am particularly fond of the flat, red ones we've been seeing.  So we opted for the grocery store buy.  Mike came home with three little guys a few days later.

After a couple days of them sitting in the car, they made their way inside.  And yesterday, I finally got them decked out and sitting on our front stoop.  You can also see the old box/shelf I rehabbed with some sanding, screws, and paint a few months ago.  Welcome to the front of the house, little box!

For my first pumpkin, I experimented with my first use of washi tape.  Hello Dollar Spot @ Target!  I'm telling you, hit up their fall dollar section!  I put six strips around the pumpkin, and then wrapped the stem with some thicker jute cord.  I think she looks pretty great!  And it took me less than two minutes.

I also scored some glitter in the dollar section.  I decided I needed a sparkly pumpkin.  I got a thick paintbrush and my Modpodge for this pumpkin.  I first painted the top section and then quickly sprinkled with gold glitter through the shaker top of the container.  Then I slightly tilted the pumpkin and slowly rolled it while painting a second layer to sprinkle with silver glitter.  It doesn't look amazing, but Mike really liked it, and it will sparkle a bit when our light is on.

The last one was the red flat one, which I wanted to leave alone because I liked it so much.  So there is our little front door vignette.  I'm trying to find a few things in the house that I wouldn't mind putting outside to fill the compartments.  It looks a little bit empty right now.

Quick and easy pumpkins, with little mess!  Kids could easily help with these projects, as long as they don't have a taste for glitter.   Hah!

Read about our very disappointing first Halloween in a house here.  I hope this year is more fulfilling!

#Monthly Mani - Winter Wonderland

Two exciting new things for the blog, my friends!

First:  Go like my new Facebook page - Being Mrs. Olson Blog.  We will be doing a fun giveaway when we reach 250 likes!

Second:  I am joining the #MonthlyMani crew for a new linkup party!

So here we go!

If you've seen me at all in the past few years, you've probably seen my nails painted.  They may be a bit chippy at times, but they usually have color.  I told myself a few years back that I would ALWAYS have my toenails painted and try to have my fingers done as well.

By "done", I mean painted by myself.  For special events, I will sometimes treat myself to a REAL manicure, but I generally do it pretty well at home.  Which is why the #MonthlyMani linkup is perfect for me!  I am joining along with a few other ladies who have been doing this for a while.  It will give me an opportunity to be a bit more creative and also a great reason to invest in some great polishes and adornments.

I am pretty excited, but didn't go too crazy this month.  I was recently reminded about my grey nail polish I bought while I was in Norway.  Though you might not think of grey as being "in the holiday spirit", it looks great with some gold glitter!

This way, my nails can go along with anything I am wearing.  I really love this grey color for any season and tend to get a lot of compliments on it.  With the large gold glitter as an accent, I'm ready for ANY holiday.  But especially Christmas, because it's my hubby's birthday!

Polishes include Black Poppy in Gold, Sinful Colors clear coat, and H&M Nail Polish in Miss Stone Hart.  I like this clear coat, but make sure your colored polish is VERY dry before you use it.  It tends to do a bit of stripping and some color can stick to the brush.  If you look closely, you can see some red residue on my left pinky from the color I put on my toes.

Lexy and I's new rings...polish highlights the gold!
For my first #MonthlyMani, I have to give a shout out to my mom.  When I was younger, she refused to paint my right hand for me (I'm right handed) so that I would get practice and get better at it.  To this day, I paint my right hand better than anyone I know.  Thanks for being a meanie, mom.  Now I'm great at doing my own nails!  I can also thank her for my long, strong nails.  I am lucky!

Check out my thoughts on Sinful Colors Nail Polish and Shellac Manicures.
Also, check out my fellow gals posting today for our holiday manicures!

Jute Monogram Letter {At Home}

I had a little craft weekend several months ago and realized I never blogged about it!  I was feeling crafty, made a quick trip to Michael's, and was inspired by many pictures on Pinterest over the years and Mrs. Ali Madsen posting her projects.  I didn't follow any directions, but the project is quite simple to figure out!

Head to your local craft store (Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc) and pick up your monogram letter {or your whole name or surname}.  I purchased a thin wood "O" for about $4.99 at Michael's.  It is probably about a foot tall.  While there, I also got the roll of jute cord pictured below.  I believe this was closer to 6-7 dollars.  It was 200 feet and I did have a bit left over.  There is also thicker jute, which I might consider for future projects, as this was about the thickness of yarn and it took a long time to cover my letter.

Once you have your supplies, the project just takes a bit of patience and a somewhat steady hand.  Begin with one end of your cording on the back of your letter.  Secure it with a small dab of hot glue.  From there, I unraveled a LOT of cord and cut it off.  That way I didn't have to shove the whole roll of jute through the middle of the "O" every time.  Depending on what letter you have, this may not be an issue.
My starting point, in the middle of one of the long sides
My itty-bitty hot glue gun
Ravel, ravel, ravel...Be patient!  If you want your letter smooth, you will have to carefully line up each layer.  If you want it criss-cross-funky, your project will likely go much faster.  I ran in to some issues on the "corners" of the "O", so I got a little creative with covering the letter and actually really like the extra character it adds.
My funky corners

The finished product!

I added a fun scrapbooking flower I also purchased at Michael's. I love the pop of turquoise and the bit of femininity that it adds!  When completed, I tilted this up against a picture frame on top of an old crate that I got for 8$ out junking.  In our new house, I have hanging it on the wall in our bedroom among my gallery pictures.  I love the shabby feel, the fact that I made it myself, it was less than $10, and that I can change it up/dress it up any time I want.

This is a very easy project than any beginner craftswoman can make!

Weekends Abound

Wow.  What a fun week/end!

I had a lot going on this week, but luckily it was fun stuff.  First of all, I would like to say YESSSS to the fact that television shows are past their winter break and are starting up again :)  The Bachelor, and yes...I'm a sucker for the ABC Family shows, specifically Pretty Little Liars (ridiculous, Natalie...I know).  Work has been so painfully slow this week, and probably this coming week that I have been killing time reading, looking for jobs, and playing games on my phone.  As for the jobs, my contract is up in April and so I'm on the hunt...if you know of anything, send it my way!

Thursday we had an LDS (sorority) happy hour.  It was myself, Reba, and Madison (who we haven't seen in a long time) at a tap house.  It had DELISH beer cheese soup, I'm going back for more soon!  It was nice to have a smaller group and get to really catch up with each other.  Thanks for coming ladies!

Friday we had a surprise going away party for one of my best friends, Katie.  She is leaving TOMORROW (ohmygod I just processed that) to go serve with the NCCC division of Americorps.  Check out the gist of her commitment here and you can also keep up with her new blog if you'd like to here.  First, we visited the famous Kramarczuk's Deli for a quick dinner.  It is eastern European food, smells delicious, and was equally as tasty.  I had a pot-pie type thing and a Varenyky (perogie) and Mike had goulash stew.  It was fun to try something new :)  I would definitely recommend it, and we had leftovers, too!

Anywho, my friend Anna invited Katie over to "play video games with the boys", and even though Katie showed up late (we all knew she would, love you Katie!) she was TOTALLY SURPRISED!!  We had a small, fun group, got to meet some more of Katie's college friends, chatted, ate some treats courtesy of Anna and gave Katie a hopefully memorable sendoff.  I am dying thinking that I might not see Katie for 10 months, but I know this is truly the best path for her right now and I am so proud of her for taking the risk and doing what she feels compelled to do.  I love you, Katie!!

Saturday morning I was up at the crack of dawn...okay, it was 8:00, but I freaking love sleeping and I'm going to pretend it was the crack of dawn.  What gets me up that early on a Saturday?  Time with FRIENDS!  Sorority sisters, to be exact.  We met for coffee in Eagan and 4 hours later we decided it was probably time to continue on with our days.  I'm sure the workers thought we were long lost family or something!  It was great to see these ladies in a small, cozy environment and really catch up and get to know each other more  :)

The rest of Saturday I kind of felt like poo but managed to do a "project" I've been wanting to do.  I bound together all of our wedding cards so that we will always have them organized and can go back and see the special notes from our family and friends.  I swiped a two-hole-punch from work, which worked like a charm and got the silver rings at Michael's for about $1.50 for a pack of two. Totally worth and I'm glad we'll always have this.

Saturday night, although I felt crappy, we went to check out the Ice Castles at the Mall of America.  I had a Groupon for it, and our next weekends are busy, so we sort of had to do it.  First of all, it was 10 degrees and cold as crap even though I had my leg warmers from Norway and my bomber hat on.  Curse you, MINNESOTA!!!  Secondly, do not waste your money!!  It is such a rip-off and reallllyyy not that cool at all.
This is all you need to see:
Freaking COLD!
Today, we continued our tradition of listening to records on Sunday mornings.  I really hope this is something we will do with our kids some day.  It is relaxing and gives us some "us time" to be together and truly enjoy the times we have.  We have our player set up in the loft so it can be heard all over our house.  I got a bit antsy and made Mike hang up two new frames my mom got me for Christmas.  Have I mentioned I love our loft??

There you have it.  Another week filled with amazing friends, making memories, and even some relaxing.

Take time to make time, my friends.  It is precious and you should most definitely be spending it with
people you love.

App Alert - Offer Up

I came across a sponsored ad on my Facebook a week ago Sunday.  You know, those annoying ones that are in your news feed for no good reason.  I actually scroll through them sometimes, because you never know what you'll find.

For some reason, I downloaded this app called OfferUp.  Just to check it out.  We have a few things in our house that we've been wanting to get rid of, such as extra furniture.  So I decided to put a few things for sale.  In a week and two days, I've made over $200 by selling things that we no longer need!

It has been a quick and easy experience and all good so far.  You simply post one picture, a small description, your price, and general location.  From there, your item is "offered up" to the homepage that is shown below.  You can select categories to search or just scroll endlessly until something catches your eye.

When you find something you like, you message the person in the app and offer them a price.  From there, you make plans where/when to meet and exchange.  It is so nice not having to give out your phone number or deal with the giant mess of Craigslist.  For me, it has been a lot easier and much more successful.

I haven't bought anything from the app and likely won't, but if you are looking for something in particular, or something for a good deal, it's definitely worth checking out!  I have been really lucky that my things have been catching people's eyes.  Now, our house is starting to look a bit bare in some places!  Mike even had to pull an old table to use as a bedside table.  Oops!

Check out this app and let me know what you think!  PS- I was not in any way compensated for this review, I have just had good luck and wanted to share :)

Junk Market / Thrifting / Swap Meet Adventures

Last weekend while running errands, we saw a sign on the road for a junk market.  I was so excited and looked forward to it all week.  We used to go to the swap meet in Annandale almost every Saturday growing up.  Every once in a while, we would even sell stuff, but that wasn't as fun.

I have memories of 50¢ Amish moonie pies (aka whoopie pies, but these were ah-mah-zing and impossible to duplicate), snow cones, TY beanie babies, looking at the puppies, and I even got a bunny named Sunny once.  My dad love auctions, junk, and having his garage full of STUFF.  My mom likes decorating, old things, and furniture.  I realize now...I'm turning into my parents!

This is getting scary, y'all!!

Mike told me in the middle of this week not to get my hopes up {I was realllly excited} and he didn't want me to be disappointed.  Sometimes I get a little overzealous.  I told him we were getting up at 8am to get the good stuff.  He HATES getting up early on the weekends...his response...
"I'll go whenever you want to go, honey."  GAWD I love him!  Seriously, so lucky.

So this morning, we were out of the house before 9am, and headed to the "junk market".
It.was.AWESOME!  After my mini vintage-hunting with my mom over labor day weekend, I've been itching to shop at anything other than an actual store.  This was in a parking lot, the weather was beyond amazing, and after only 2 hours, less than $40, including some sweet edibles and coffee, we were headed home with some sweet scores!

There were vendors (Norwex, Mary Kay...which I avoided), small vendors with garage sale/personal things, and small businesses such as jewelry makers, purses, etc.  Pretty much everything you could ask for. I had my eye out for decorative things for the house, furniture, and jewelry.  I did pretty well!

I also got some cards and flyers for upcoming barn sales, more markets, and store fronts to check out. If you are interested, let me know, and we can go shopping together!  But seriously, I'm going to a barn sale on October 19th if you'd like to join me.  I talked to a lot of owners and made some connections to keep my eyes on this little world of "junkers".  I think I found a new hobby!

I couldn't wait to get home and tell my mom about our adventure.  Her and my dad taught me to haggle, and I almost went all out when I saw a lady with the vintage wine box I had my eyes on.  It's common to buy items even from other customers, something my mom does all the time!

It's been hard to find good places to "shop" around here, but now I'm ready to roll.  Too bad the season's almost over!  I'll be more prepared for next summer.  I now have my mom going to a barn sale for me next weekend, because I'll be up north at a wedding.  She knows what I like, and she got me into it, so I'm sure she'll find us some good stuff!

We also got side-tracked to an estate sale.  By this time it was almost noon, so it was pretty picked over, but we found a few things, and now we have another thing to keep our eyes out for!

Here are some pictures:

Some of my loot.  Mostly decorative things, but jewelry and a wallet as well!

Anniversary Party ~ 35 Years!

At the end of May, my parents celebrated 35 years of marriage.  They met in high school, got married young, and have lived in the same house for over 30 years as well.  My brothers and I have always been "long-term relationship" people.  My parents have obviously done something right...

So we had to celebrate!

I planned a bonfire and potluck and invited family, friends, and good weather.  The Saturday kicked off when my aunt brought over the picture board she had made with wedding and other fun photos of my parents.  It was so fun to see the old pictures , clothes (hehe), and hear some great stories!

I luckily had time to do a little bit of DIY for decorations.   The color palette ended up being a bit primary, but it ended up looking great!  I made custom cake toppers by using a paper cutter, stamps, and toothpicks.  Anyone could make these cute little toppers in any color or shape!  They looked great on my homemade chocolate cupcakes with green frosting.  A win!

I made a few tissue flowers  to hang over the windows to add a bit of flare.  These are super easy!  Accordian fold a bunch of tissue together, tie a string around the center, cut the edges and POOF it.  Hang from the ceiling or keep one side flat and set on a table or in a bowl, etc.  CHEAP and EASY!

I also made a paper bunting to hang over the food table.  With so much light coming in the porch, it was really hard to get a picture.  I simply cut paper triangles, taped them on a thin red jute cord, and wrote "HAPPY 35th!" in cork letters.  It looked so cute hanging off of a set of antlers!

As I said, the weather was fabulous and we enjoyed a bonfire in the back yard. Our dog loves when people are around and usually ends up spending the night by the fire.

I got to spend some time playing with all of the kids that were around.  I got lots of hugs from my future nieces and enjoyed having some time to act like a kid again.

I want to again say THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by and shared love and memories with my parents.  I *hope* they had an amazing time and will want to celebrate for their 50th!  THAT will be a bigger party :)

I'd love to see your DIY decor and hear your party ideas!

Start Your Own "Spark File" {Thought Storage}

My morning commute is only 10 miles, and it takes 40 minutes.  It's pretty maddening.  But now Mike works from home, and I get to drive the CR-V which has Bluetooth audio.  And so I've come to enjoy podcasts...

My favorite is RadioLab, but I like it so much that I'm now listening to episodes from 2011!  So I had to find something else to listen to and have gone back to Stuff to Blow Your Mind.  I definitely am not as in to it, but it's giving me something else to listen to.

This morning I was listening to Steven Johnson:  How We Got to Now.  It talks about innovations and how we got things in our "modern world".  I wasn't too taken in by it, but the one thing that stuck out was when he talked about his SPARK FILE.

This is a document that he has been working in for almost ten years.  Whenever he gets an idea or has an interesting thought, he writes it down in the document.  It's not organized, and is now over 70,000 words, which is longer than his longest book.  But WHY?

He is a believer in the idea that great ideas often come from hunches.  A great idea generally doesn't present itself in full form.  Sometimes you need to come back to something to fully develop it.  Or two ideas can make a connection, and then you're off and running.  This is why he is constantly writing down ideas.

He said that he comes back to it about every few months and reads the whole thing.  That is where some ideas blend together, become more prominent, or just stay dormant.  His Spark File has lots ideas for books, articles, speaking ideas, etc.  He says that "The key is to capture as many hunches as possible".  You can read more about it here.

I think this is a great idea for anyone to use!  I'm going to start writing down blog post ideas, small business ideas, clever names for blogs/businesses/people, tips that come up at work, vacation ideas, etc.  Even though I don't see myself as an entrepreneur or a business owner, it will be great to read through my Spark File and see if anything new blossoms!  You never know what may come about when you're reading your own creative thoughts.

Think of it as a dream journal for your conscious hours.

It might also be cool to read back your file from years ago and see how your mind was brewing up ideas.  Some thoughts just become unimportant because you are focusing on other things at the time.  You never know when the timing might be right and then you're ready to pursue one of your ideas that you wrote down eight months ago!

ANYONE can do this!  Start a Word document, an Evernote, a physical journal, or whatever you can keep close.  Write down your budding ideas.  Re-read it every few months or every six months.  Take the time to breathe it in and appreciate the corners of your mind that may have ended up on the pages.

This is something simple that everyone can do.  Use it to better yourself and enjoy it!  I can't wait to get mine started.  Let me know what you think!

Furniture Updos - Painting Wooden Furniture {Old Dressers}

As many of you know, basically everything we have as far as household/living items is a hand me down.  Personally, I think it's fabulous because FURNITURE IS EXPENSIVE!  And we're pretty lucky that we got some well used, {but dang good} couches, tables, and other necessities.  I always wondered why furniture stores advertised their financing specials...  After considering purchasing a new bed frame, bookshelf, etc., I realized why.  It's freegin' expensive.  Not something I really want to spend money on at this point.  So currently, our bed is on the floor, and we make do with our tiny, secondhand dressers.  It works!

But hose are my enemies.  Our crappy dressers.  One of them we sniped as a who-knows-how-many-time-reused dresser from the fraternity house.  It has 3 drawers which I hammered back together to working order by myself in 2009.  The other, I literally have NO CLUE where it came from, but my brother had it when he lived at the rental house.  I don't ask questions...probably don't want to know!

Both of them are crappy wood, flimsy, and small.  But also, FREE and currently in our possession.
Coming to terms with that, I decided to feed my mint obsession by painting them.  I did a bit of online reading: blogs, e-how, and whatever else I could find.  Then I purchased my weapons.  My paint, that is.

1.  Zinsser Primer:  for all surfaces.  I think this was around 5$.  Make sure whatever primer you buy is worth your money.  One of my dressers was laminate (glossy surface), so I read online and decided this was the best primer.  I applied with both a brush and a roller.  Depending on what sort of edges you have, I started on them with a brush, and then rolled the larger portions.  Get a nice covering, but not too thick!  You essentially want to cover the darkness of the wood and give your paint something to adhere to.

2.  Paint.  I chose a color called Mint Shake from Wal-Mart.  You want INTERIOR paint, of course, and I chose a flat finish.  I got their cheapest brand, which was around $9 for a whole gallon.  You do not need anywhere near a whole gallon to paint a few dressers, but it was only a dollar more, so I sprang for it.  (After the two dressers I painting, and some waste, I probably still have about 2/3 of the gallon left.)

3.  Finish/lacquer.  I got the polycrylic.  Again, from reading online, this seemed like the best option. This was fairly expensive, around $13.  You probably could get something similar for cheaper, but for my first try, I wanted to go with what people suggested.

Now for the fun part, get painting!

1.  For laminate surfaces, start with your primer.  For regular wood surfaces, use a fine grain sand paper to even out your surface.  Remember to wipe down with a wet cloth (old rag, it will be messy) after sanding so that you don't have any residue while you are priming.  *Warning: sanding is not as fun as it looks, and is really tiring!!

After sanding the wood dresser

2.  Prime your surfaces.  Again, I used both a brush, and a roller.  And at times, a foam brush.  This depends on the detail your piece of furniture has, and what you feel comfortable using.

Primed surfaces

3.  Allow ample time to dry.  Since I was doing this at night, I actually let each coat dry for approximately 24 hours, as I was only doing 1 coat per night.  That is not necessary, but make sure to read your paint/primer/sealant label to judge your proper drying time.

4.  Paint your surfaces with your chosen color.  Depending on what color you have chosen, and what color your original was, you will have to do a number of coats.  I ended up doing 3 coats of my color. Since it was light, and the wood I started with was dark, it took a little more.  Generally, you will be doing two coats of paint.

5.  Use your sealant to finish off your project!  I chose the satin finish, as I didn't want something too glossy, but it is up to you.  This part was frustrating...  Everything I read said to use a brush to apply the finish.  It did not go on as smooth as I felt it should, and somehow there would randomly be dry spots.  I ended up doing two coats to make sure everything was completely covered and sealed up. This resulted in a slightly more glossy finish than I intended, but it looks great.  *Warning:  this dries fairly quickly, if you brush it too much, you will get a lot of streaks!  It is also very runny, so make sure you are fully prepared before starting this coat.  Be strategic and patient with your application.

START:

Finish:

For the 5 drawer dresser, I ended up using the original hardware, and it looks really great with the new, lighter color.  The 3 drawer dresser, I ordered some glass knobs from Amazon.com.  I thought the glass would add to the vintage feel, and I am excited for them to arrive tomorrow!

All in all, this was a major success, and I think I did pretty great for my first go around.  It definitely took longer than I thought it would, simply because I was doing it after work, and I was usually busy on the weekends.

My Tips:

*Invest in a good brush and roller to ensure your paint is going on even and streak-free
*Be patient with yourself
*Buy a drop cloth to paint on.  I was very careful, but I dripped a lot!
*Make sure to let your layers dry adequately.  (By the end, I had 6 coats: primer, 3 coats of paint, and 2 coats of finish)
*Make sure you have a good primer, it will be the beginning of your whole project and you want a good base
*It helps to have an extra set of eyes available to watch for drips, smudges, etc. and to help you hold pieces while you are painting the bottom, edges, etc.  (Thanks to the hubby for being helpful, patient, and encouraging me!!)

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my "new" dressers!  We have dark walls in our bedroom, and the mint color looks fantastic.  The finish is great, and I am so happy with the results.  Don't fret about old furniture, you can always revamp your hand me downs and give them new life!

Cookies for Breakfast {Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Pancakes}

Yesterday we had cookies for breakfast.  Or at least it tasted like it!  We had chocolate chip oatmeal pancakes.  Which were actually pretty healthy.  No sugar, whole wheat flour, and no syrup needed.

My base recipe can be found here.

These are very easy to make.  I would say this makes enough for one person, or two people if you are also eating something else.  This made 3 medium pancakes for us, about softball size.  We split them and then had eggs as well.  If you are hungry/feeding more people, I would suggest doubling the recipe.

Ingredients:

1 very ripe medium banana  (I used a large, ripe banana)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 flax egg (1 Tbsp flaxseed meal + 2.5 Tbsp water)  **I will explain this soon**
Pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Tablespoon almond butter  (I used peanut butter)
1 Tablespoon canola oil (I used coconut oil)
3 Tablespoons almond milk (or other milk)
1/2 cup rolled oats (or gluten free oats)
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
3 Tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips

FIRST:  Make your flaxseed egg.  WHAT THE HECK IS A FLAXSEED EGG?  It's a handmade egg substitute.  I got my start here.  I put 1 tbsp milled flax with just under 3 tbsp of water.  Stir, and put in fridge for about 15 minutes.  It will thicken in consistency and be much better binding for your pancakes.
This is the finished product
...Once that is finished, start with your actual recipe.

1.  Mash banana with your baking powder.  It gets sort of fizzy and weird.  Have no fear!

2.  Add your flax egg, oil, salt, vanilla, almond butter, almond milk and stir.

3.  Lightly stir in oats and flour.

4.  Gently fold in chocolate chips.

5.  Place on griddle and cook for 2-4 minutes on each side.

They take quite a while to cook.  Make sure your pan is not too hot.   Then...

ENJOY!!!  They are delicious!

Next time, I will add cinnamon {ifreakinglovecinnamon}, maybe some more PB, and definitely double the recipe so we have more to enjoy.  This would be an easy thing to freeze and take to work for breakfast.  YUMM!!

Quick, easy, fairly healthy...just the way I like it!  And I happen to love pancakes.
WIN!
